**About Duplex 2205 (UNS S31803)**
Duplex 2205 is a nitrogen-enhanced duplex stainless steel designed to overcome common corrosion issues that are typically found in the 300 series stainless steels. This grade is known for its unique microstructure, which consists of austenite pools surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. In the annealed condition, it contains approximately 40-50% ferrite, giving it a balanced combination of strength and corrosion resistance.
Often referred to as the "workhorse" grade, Duplex 2205 is the most widely used in the duplex family due to its excellent mechanical properties and cost-effectiveness. It is particularly suitable for applications where 300 series stainless steels may be prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking.
It's important to note that the use of Duplex 2205 should be limited to temperatures below 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures can lead to embrittlement.
The combination of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen gives this alloy exceptional resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. This makes it ideal for use in marine environments, brackish water, bleaching operations, closed-loop water systems, and certain food processing applications. Its corrosion resistance is superior to many standard stainless steels like 316L and 317L in most environments.
