Tire refurbishment saves costs for transportation companies

Tire refurbishment is becoming a mature business and its greatest motivation is that it can save costs for transportation companies.

In most cases, a tire has only one life-the tire's pattern is worn to the limit mark, it will be replaced, and then be regarded as rubbish.

Michelin can continue the tires for three "lives" through refurbishment. At Michelin's tire retreading plant in Jiading District, Shanghai, after the old tires have been grooved, a certain depth pattern is carved at the base of the groove to prevent slipping and can be used again; if this tire is used properly, the tire If the body is not damaged, a layer of tire rubber can be added to the old carcass in the future, and then processed and synthesized to remanufacture the finished tire and obtain the third or fourth life.

The plant has been in operation for 5 years and provides 10 specifications and 12 patterns of Michelin retreaded tire products to the Chinese market.

Here, an old tire can be reborn after seven steps including light inspection, carcass delamination detection, primer control and large grinding, precured tread rubber preparation, tread molding, tire vulcanization, and finished product inspection.

Gao Wei, the brand manager of the Michelin Bus and Coach business, said in an interview with CBN Weekly that Michelin's retreaded tires can reach more than 90% of new tires, and the production of a new truck tire consumes an average of 84 liters of oil, while refurbishing A truck tire consumes only 28 liters of oil on average.

According to data released by the China Tire Renovation and Utilization Association, the refurbishment of a used tire with a size of 9.00R20 can save 9 kg of rubber, 4 kg of carbon black, 3.4 kg of steel cord, 18 kg of petroleum, compared to the production of a new tire of the same specification. , steel 1.75 kg. At present, China produces 200 million waste tires each year. From 2006 to 2010, the annual growth rate of the new tire (tire tire) in the country was 10%, while the annual growth rate of retreaded tires reached 20%.

Of course, not all old tires can be refurbished; it needs to be tested first. The Michelin Company has trained all retailers on tire renewal knowledge, and customers need to contact the retailer when refurbishing used tires. After the old tyres have been checked by the retailer and there are no problems, they will be transferred to the wholesalers of the Michelin tyres. If professional sales personnel check the old tyres without any problems, they will be sent to the refurbished factory in Michelin. Then this old tire needs to be tested with a non-destructive flaw detector and other equipment to determine if the carcass belt is intact and there is no delamination before it can be adapted.

At present, customers of many tire retreading plants, including Michelin, are mainly users of trucks and buses. The cost of truck and bus tires is higher, and the cost of retreaded tires is only about half that of new tires, which makes transportation companies more interested in tire retreading.

Normally, a truck is equipped with 6 to 22 tires. These tires need to be replaced when they reach 150,000 to 180,000 kilometers. The cost of tires accounts for about 6% of the operating cost of freight vehicles.

Shanghai Wanshihong Dangerous Goods Logistics Co., Ltd. has more than 50 trucks and trailers. Two years ago, it started using two Michelin tires. Ding Binqiang, general manager of the company, said that while saving costs, retreading tires and new tires can guarantee the safety and efficiency of company operations.

Gao Wei said that Michelin's retreading tire business targets two customers. One customer is originally a user of Michelin's new tires. After the tires are used up, they can deliver the carcasses to Michelin and commission them to refurbish them; there is also a case where customers Michelin's finished retreaded tires will be purchased directly.

The cost of these two different ways is not the same. A Michelin-certified retailer in Shanghai said that the retail price of a brand new Michelin XTE2+ tire exceeds RMB 3,000, and the retail price of this type of retreaded tire is only RMB 1,430 per article. If the customer commissions the retreading with the old tires, Michelin can make the same pattern as the original new tire, and the renovation cost is 1,130 yuan each.

Michelin has a sales representative team of more than 100 people across the country and will visit customers regularly to provide professional training, tire file management, cost saving reports, and refurbishment services. Fulmar Logistics of France is the beneficiary of this service. In one year, the normal tire pressure ratio of its team tires has been increased from 39% to 90%, and the tire's damage rate has been greatly reduced, bringing the tire's refurbishment rate to 28%.

Gao Yu said that the tire refurbishment business will not affect the sales of new Michelin tyres. Many customers have gradually become Michelin's new tire users after using Michelin's retreaded tires.

Michelin not only refurbished the old tires of the Michelin brand, but also refurbished the old tires of other brands. It also sold finished retreaded tires based on other brands of carcasses, but the name and the selling price varied. The tires refurbished with Michelin branded old tires also use the Michelin brand, while other brands of old tires are refurbished and then sold using the NewLife brand. Gao Wei said that at present, only Michelin's retreaded tires are still using the brand of new tires, and its after-sales service is the same as the new tires.

“Our refurbishment business allows users to know the value of used tires. Many users do not understand this.” Gao Yu said that for a truck tire with a price of RMB 3,000 as an example, if the carcass is intact, Michelin The recovery price is 250 yuan per article.

In order to expand the scale of the refurbishment business, all Michelin retailers nationwide are carrying out refurbishment services while distributing new tires. This is a huge market. Competition is also as fierce as the new tire market. Bridgestone, Goodyear and other tire manufacturers are also pursuing the refurbishment of truck and bus tires.

The Shanghai-based Michelin-certified retailer mentioned above is also doing business for Bridgestone. The retailer said that Bridgestone’s commissioned renovation cost was RMB 800/bar, which is about 30% less than that of Michelin.

INCOLOY®

The registered trademark name, Incoloy, is applied as the prefix name to several highly corrosion resistant high temperature strength metal alloys produced by Special Metals Corporation. These Incoloy alloys or superalloys are nickel-based alloys that exhibit traits that include good corrosion resistance in aqueous environments, excellent strength and oxidation resistance in high-temperature settings, good creep-rupture strength, and ease of fabrication.

Alloys of identical chemical and mechanical properties are available from other manufacturers and offer excellent alternatives to the various Incoloy brand alloys.

The corrosion-resistant superalloys are widely used in extreme environments where tremendous heat and corrosion resistance is paramount to the integrity of the end product. Chemical and petrochemical processing, power plants, and oil and gas industries widely use these superalloys.

Incoloy Availability

Yuhong Group supplies Incoloy 800, 800H/HT and 825 in the form of plate, sheet, strip, bar, wire, pipe, tubing, pipe fittings, and flanges.

What are the Characteristics of Incoloy ?

Good corrosion resistance in aqueous environments
Excellent strength resistance in high-temperature settings
Excellent oxidation and carburization resistance in high-temperature settings
Good creep-rupture strength
Ease of fabrication

In what Applications are Incoloy alloys used ?

Process piping, heat exchangers, carburizing equipment, heating-element sheathing, nuclear steam-generator tubing
