Recently, a groundbreaking environmental protection system was installed at a large-scale boiler at Qingdao Thermal Power Co., Ltd., replacing traditional limestone with calcium carbide slag as the desulfurization agent. This innovative technology not only helps reduce sulfur dioxide emissions but also provides a new solution for recycling industrial waste. Haijing Chemical's calcium carbide slag, once considered a byproduct, is now being effectively utilized in this process, offering both environmental and economic benefits.
Sulfur dioxide is one of the primary pollutants emitted from coal-fired power plants. In collaboration with the environmental protection department, Qingdao Thermal Power conducted an extensive evaluation of existing desulfurization technologies. Based on their findings, they implemented a system that uses calcium carbide slag—primarily composed of calcium carbonate—from Haijing Chemical Industry Group. This method is applied after the wet flue gas desulfurization process, achieving a desulfurization efficiency of up to 92%. Annually, more than 10,000 tons of calcium carbide slag are consumed, significantly contributing to pollution control.
The project is being carried out in two phases. The first phase, which focused on upgrading Boiler No. 1, was completed by the end of July to meet the heating demands for the Olympic Sailing Event. The remaining two boilers were expected to be fully renovated by the end of October. Once completed, the project will cut sulfur dioxide emissions by nearly 1,000 tons annually. This achievement will play a crucial role in helping Qingdao meet its energy-saving and emission reduction targets under the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" and improve the city’s overall air quality.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in sustainable development, proving that industrial waste can be transformed into a valuable resource while protecting the environment. It sets a positive example for other industries looking to adopt greener practices.
