Due to the weight of the gear pump's gears and the radial thrust generated during meshing between the driving and driven gears, the drive shaft and bushing are prone to eccentric wear. This wear increases the clearance between the shaft and the bushing, leading to oil leakage and reduced oil delivery. To address this issue, the journal or bushing can be repaired. For minor wear on the journal, a new sleeve can be pressed onto the old one, restoring the clearance within acceptable limits without requiring shaft repair. However, in cases of severe wear where the gap is significantly increased, both the bushing and the shaft need to be replaced or restored. The shaft may undergo chrome plating or welding to increase its diameter, followed by grinding to standard dimensions, ensuring proper fit with the bushing.
Wear on the pump housing cavity and the gears has a major impact on the pump’s oil delivery capacity. When the shaft or bushing is severely worn, the teeth of the gears may come into contact with the pump housing, especially at the high-pressure side. This leads to greater wear in that area, increasing the top clearance and reducing the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet chambers. As a result, the efficiency of oil scraping and pressure buildup decreases, causing a drop in oil pressure and pump output. To repair the worn pump housing, the inner surface can be lined with a new insert. Additionally, gear tooth wear in the thickness direction increases the meshing clearance. Since this wear is often uneven, the gears can be rotated 180 degrees and reused.
The end face of the gear and the pump cover also experience wear, which affects the end clearance. If the end face becomes worn, it can be polished and then ground to ensure the correct clearance between the gear and the pump cover. Excessive wear beyond the allowable limit will significantly affect the pump’s performance, so regular inspection and maintenance are essential to maintain proper operation and prevent further damage.
