The world’s largest producer of presses is hard to claim power

China's plastics production and consumption currently rank first in the world. Low-end and domestically-made presses can basically meet the technical requirements for domestic plastic products processing, but high-end presses still have to spend a lot of foreign exchange imports every year.

According to statistics, in 2006 China's plastics machinery manufacturing import and export totaled 2.304 billion US dollars, an increase of 6.18% over the previous year. Among them, the export value of 586 million US dollars, an increase of 36.69%; import value of 1.718 billion US dollars, a decrease of 1.32%. It can be seen from this that China's presses' production and export capabilities have been greatly improved. From the perspective of the unit price of imports and exports, taking injection molding machines, which account for more than half of the total import and export volume of plastics presses, as an example, the import volume reached 14,900 units in 2006, the amount was 9,221.77 million US dollars, the average unit price was 61,891 US dollars, and the export volume was 14,200 units. The amount was 34.615 million U.S. dollars and the average unit price was 24,376 U.S. dollars. It can be seen that the unit price of imported injection molding machines is obviously higher than the export level. Most of China's imports are high-end products, while most of the exports are low-end products.

It is worth noting that although imports of China's presses are declining, imported presses still account for about 45% of the total domestic market in 2006 (including export re-imports), and some large presses still rely on imports. For example, plastic pelletizers in domestic large-scale ethylene projects have been relying on imports. In China, only one domestic largest batch of 10,000-ton pelletizers has been trial-produced at home, while foreign companies have been able to mass-produce 100,000-ton pelletizers. The main presses that China has been relying on imports include: precision injection molding machines for production carrier CDs required for electronic communication engineering; large-scale injection molding machines and large-scale multilayer hollow molding machines for the automotive industry; and multi-layered hollow molding machines for the packaging industry; Medical and precision extruders. This is in sharp contrast to China’s position as the world's largest producer of presses.

At present, China's plastics production centers are mainly concentrated in Zhejiang, Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Shandong, and its market share is 44.73%, 25.44%, 9.86%, and 9.68% respectively, totaling 89.71%. In 2006, there were about 388 enterprises (including state-owned enterprises and state-owned enterprises with annual sales income of more than 5 million yuan) in the above-mentioned enterprises in the plastics machinery manufacturing industry, including 58 loss-making enterprises. According to statistics on sales revenue of the top 10 companies, the sum of their profits has accounted for 52% of the industry's total profit, indicating that the profitability of the SMEs in the industry is very low or even losses, reflecting that the overall level of technology is still quite low.

In recent years, China's presses market has maintained a stable growth. It is estimated that by 2010, the demand for presses in China will increase to around 100,000 units. Among them, injection molding machines accounted for about 35%, extrusion units accounted for about 25%, hollow molding machines accounted for about 5%, and other molding machines accounted for about 35%. In view of the rapid development of the entire industry, many enterprises that used to produce machine tools and military products have also begun to produce presses. Coupled with the rapid development of individual and collective enterprises, the competition in ordinary presses in the domestic market has become increasingly fierce. In particular, although the number of Sino-foreign joint ventures is not large, the total output value of the Sino-foreign joint ventures currently accounts for more than 40% of the total output value of the domestic industry, and it has strong competitiveness. Therefore, on the whole, depending on low-end products to seize the market, I am afraid the space for survival will be smaller and smaller. For companies in the industry, the way out is to fully develop R&D and production of high-end presses.
