not easy! The development history of domestic automatic transmission

The lack of core technology in Chinese companies is not groundless. Cars occupy a very important position in all industrial products, and engines and gearboxes are the top priorities for cars. However, it is these two core components that we have not had our own products for a long period of time, especially the automatic transmissions that have become popular nowadays. It has always been a major development in the development of domestic cars. problem.

In the early days, no matter whether it is an engine or a gearbox, domestic car companies have no independent research and development capabilities. As we all know, most of the engines on home-made models came from the northeast corner of the motherland—the factories of Shenyang Aerospace Mitsubishi and Harbin Dongan Mitsubishi provided engines for car companies across the country, and the 4AT transmission produced by Japan’s Jatco, which was almost “bundled” with the Mitsubishi engine. Box, it logically occupies the mainstream of domestic automatic transmission for vehicles. In 2008, Dongan Mitsubishi introduced Mitsubishi's automatic transmission technology and began production of 4AT and 5AT automatic transmissions, which are sold together with the engine.

In all autonomous car companies, Chery was the first to make a breakthrough in the field of automatic transmissions. As early as 2003, Chery established Chery Precision Machinery. Its main goal was gearbox research and development. For this reason, Chery also dug Zhu Xinchao, a senior engineer of the original Australian DSI, as general manager of Chery Precision Machinery. In 2009, China's first self-developed CVT CVT was born in Chery. As a pioneer in self-developed gearboxes, Chery owns 112 patented gearbox technologies and is worthy of the title “Technical Chery”.

The technical image that BYD left behind is deeply rooted in people's minds. They have also made achievements in gearboxes, and focused their research and development on double-clutch gearboxes. By relying on its own efforts, BYD has mastered the two core technologies of the most important dual clutch module and electronic control system (TCU) in the dual-clutch transmission field by studying foreign DSG and other foreign dual-clutch gearboxes, and produced China's first in 2011. Taiwan double clutch gearbox.

In the past two years, Geely has always launched a premium model, and the action in the transmission field is also worthy of mention. In 2009, Kyrgyzstan used A$70 million to acquire DSI, Australia’s second-largest independent automatic transmission manufacturer at the time, and many of Geely’s models also used the 6AT automatic transmission from DSI. At the end of 2014, Geely sold most of DSI’s shares because they had better solutions. After Volvo gave up its dual-clutch technology, Geely developed proprietary intellectual property rights by digesting Volvo's technology. The 7-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox is likely to be used in the upcoming remodel Borui.

JAC also launched its self-developed dual-clutch gearbox at the end of last year. As a result of more than four years of research and development by JAC, this wet dual-clutch gearbox has six forward gears and can withstand a maximum torque of 270 N·m. The Ruifeng S5 equipped with this transmission has achieved a fuel consumption of 7.9L/100km and has a good fuel economy. In addition, SAIC Motor Group has also developed dual-clutch gearboxes in cooperation with old folks. Guangqi has used dual-clutch gearboxes from Fiat, and Guanzhi has directly found a European team to develop dual-clutch gearboxes.

There are objective reasons why Chinese brands collectively generate dual-clutch gearboxes. Technically speaking, in the case of ordinary AT gearboxes using torque converters, foreign companies based mainly on Aisin and ZF have already had a very mature R&D and production system, and patented technologies are also tightly controlled (domestic The 8AT made by Shandong Shengrui Drive in conjunction with Beihang and German experts has not been favored by most car companies. The case of CVT gearboxes is similar. Double clutching is a technology that has only emerged in recent years. It is more similar to the MT manual gearbox that has been used on a large scale by Chinese brands and is more technically acceptable. At the marketing level, the dual-clutch gearbox is thanks to the mass publicity of the past few years. It has become a representative of advanced technology in the country, consumers are more willing to purchase, and it is also a symbol of corporate technical strength.

Summary: From the beginning of a blank space, up to now, many car companies have their own automatic transmission, so the course from scratch is a gratifying progress in the independent car companies. From the CVT continuously variable transmission, AT automatic transmission to the final DCT dual clutch gearbox, independent car companies have gradually clear their own direction of development. Currently, the technology of dual-clutch gearboxes is not yet fully matured. From the timing, this may be an opportunity for domestic companies to achieve "turning overtaking."
