The automobile industry has emerged as a dilemma in the differentiation of passenger cars and commercial vehicles

Currently, purchasing a Peugeot 206 in Jiangcheng requires customers to place an order well in advance. The model has been extremely popular, contributing significantly to the company's rapid growth. In the first two months of this year, Shenlong produced 23,967 units, a 69.6% increase compared to the same period last year. Sales reached 27,172, up by 38.4%. These strong performances have brought substantial profits, with Shenlong reporting a profit turnaround of 176 million yuan in just two months.
The success of Shenlong has become a bright spot in the province’s automotive sector. Wu Xinmin, head of the Economic Operation Department at the Provincial Economic Commission, noted that despite national macroeconomic regulation, rising energy prices, overcapacity, and fierce market competition, the automobile industry in the province has maintained smooth operations, particularly in passenger vehicle production.
According to statistics, the province produced 38,600 passenger vehicles between January and February, a 48% increase year-on-year. More encouragingly, the auto industry turned profitable after a negative profit growth in the previous year, achieving 369 million yuan in profit—an increase of 38.9%.
Experts from the provincial machinery and automotive industry investment promotion center believe the profit growth is mainly due to strategic adjustments by manufacturers. Through improved management, optimized product structures, and the launch of new models, companies have seen a significant improvement in profitability.
However, the situation is quite different for commercial vehicles. Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Company in Shiyan produced only 13,922 units in the first two months, down 45.6% year-on-year. Sales also dropped by 38.6%, showing a sharp decline.
Trucks are a traditional and major segment in the province’s auto industry, holding a leading market share nationally. However, with expected lower GDP and investment growth this year, along with rising fuel prices, demand for trucks is declining. Additionally, overcapacity in the domestic truck market, especially in heavy-duty vehicles, has intensified competition.
Wu Xinmin pointed out that the sharp drop in commercial vehicle production has caused the province’s overall auto industry growth rate to fall below the national average for the first time in recent years.
As the automobile industry is a key pillar of the province's economy, maintaining a steady growth rate is crucial for meeting full-year industrial targets. To this end, local automakers are accelerating industrial restructuring. Shenlong and Dongfeng Honda continue to introduce new models, with Shenlong's “Triumph†and Dongfeng Honda’s “Civic†set to launch at the end of April, and the T21 model expected by year-end. Meanwhile, Dongfeng has also accelerated technological upgrades for medium and heavy trucks.
With the automobile industry now classified as an overcapacity sector under national regulation and increased market competition, the industry faces numerous challenges. Wu Xinmin emphasized the need for timely policy support and better coordination to stabilize the commercial vehicle market and promote the development of the auto parts industry.
