In the first three quarters of 2004, the production and sales volume of Beijing Hyundai Motors ranked fifth in the country
In the first three quarters of this year, the sales volume approached 100,000 units, representing a 1.5-fold increase compared to the same period last year. According to the latest data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the top ten car producers in terms of output remained largely unchanged during the first half of the year, though their rankings shifted slightly. Shanghai Volkswagen, FAW-Volkswagen, Shanghai GM, and Guangzhou Honda occupied the top four positions, followed by Beijing Hyundai in fifth place. The rest of the top ten included Tianjin FAW Xiali, Changan Automobile, Shenlong Automobile, Chery Automobile, and FAW Toyota.
Looking at the sales rankings for the first nine months, the top ten sedan manufacturers were similar, with Shanghai Volkswagen leading, followed closely by Shanghai General Motors, FAW-Volkswagen, Guangzhou Honda, Beijing Hyundai, Changan Automobile, Tianjin FAW Xiali, Chery Automobile, Shenlong Automobile, and FAW Toyota. Among these, Beijing Hyundai stood out as the fastest-growing manufacturer, with production reaching 95,880 units and sales hitting 94,112 units in the first three quarters—up 145.87% and 153.96%, respectively, year-on-year. Guangzhou Honda came in second, with production and sales increasing by 72.38% and 69.53%, while Shanghai GM saw growth of 41.26% in production and 48.76% in sales. Chery Automobile also performed well, with production up 20.39% and sales rising 43.34%.
Despite these positive trends, some major players have struggled this year. Although Shanghai Volkswagen maintained its position as the top-selling brand with 287,657 units sold in the first three quarters, it experienced a decline of 4.08% in production and 7.96% in sales year-on-year. FAW-Volkswagen saw a 4.42% increase in production but a 2.98% drop in sales, and it held the largest inventory among the top ten manufacturers, with over 38,000 units in stock.
As more domestic automakers enter the market, the dominance of the top ten manufacturers has weakened compared to previous years. However, their market share improved slightly from the first half of the year. In 2003, the top ten manufacturers accounted for 78.8% of national car production and 80.5% of sales. By the first half of this year, those figures dropped to 72.8% for production and 72.3% for sales. By the end of the third quarter, the top ten sedan manufacturers represented 71.7% of national sedan production and 75.1% of total domestic auto sales. This indicates a gradual recovery, even as competition intensifies in the Chinese automotive market.
