Shanghai Volkswagen Touran Leads New Concept to Preliminarily Launch Domestic MPS Market
In recent months, Shanghai Volkswagen introduced a new concept with the Touran model — MPS (Multi-Purpose Sedan). Traditionally, the Touran was seen as an MPV. But what exactly is an MPS? How does it differ from MPVs and traditional cars? In today's sluggish car market, which segment — MPVs or MPSs — is likely to become the next big trend in China? Recently, we had a conversation with Shanghai Volkswagen’s external communications team to find out more.
MPS: A Blend of Car and Multi-Functionality
According to Shanghai Volkswagen, MPS stands for Multi-Purpose Sedan. It combines the best of both worlds — the spaciousness and versatility of an MPV, but with the refined engineering and design of a car. Compared to traditional MPVs, MPS leverages many mature technologies and design principles from car manufacturing. This includes superior fuel efficiency, environmental performance, comfort, and attention to detail — all on par with conventional cars. At the same time, it integrates car-like space optimization, focusing on human-centric design. The interior isn’t just large and comfortable; it's also thoughtful, offering flexibility for different lifestyles and needs.
MPVs have long been associated with bulky, utilitarian designs. However, with growing urban traffic congestion and parking challenges, compact models are becoming increasingly popular. The key challenge for MPS is to maintain the spacious and versatile nature of an MPV while presenting it in a more elegant, car-like form. That’s where the Touran comes in.
Touran: Redefining the MPS Concept in China
The Touran is the first compact multi-purpose vehicle developed by Volkswagen AG following its traditional MPV lineup. It’s also the first MPS that Shanghai Volkswagen has launched after years of development. Built on the latest Golf design philosophy, the Touran is based on Volkswagen’s advanced PQ35 platform. It fills the gap between traditional cars and MPVs, offering a unique blend of practicality and style.
Despite its compact Class A size, the Touran boasts an impressive 1,900 liters of internal space. With seven seats, it offers up to 500 different seating combinations, making it highly adaptable for families or business use. Its dimensions — 4.39 meters long, 1.79 meters wide, and 1.63 meters tall — make it agile enough to navigate busy city centers while still providing ample room for passengers and cargo.
