In the first three quarters of 2004, the production and sales volume of Beijing Hyundai Motors ranked fifth in the country
In the first three quarters of this year, the sales volume approached 100,000 units, reflecting a growth of 1.5 times compared to the same period last year. According to the latest data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the top ten car producers remained largely unchanged in the first half of the year, but their rankings shifted slightly. The leading positions were occupied by Shanghai Volkswagen, FAW-Volkswagen, Shanghai GM, and Guangzhou Honda. Beijing Hyundai took the fifth spot, followed by Tianjin FAW Xiali, Changan Automobile, Shenlong Automobile, Chery Automobile, and FAW Toyota.
When looking at the sales rankings for the first nine months, the top ten sedan manufacturers included Shanghai Volkswagen, Shanghai GM, FAW-Volkswagen, Guangzhou Honda, Beijing Hyundai, Changan Automobile, Tianjin FAW Xiali, Chery Automobile, Shenlong Automobile, and FAW Toyota. Among these, Beijing Hyundai demonstrated the most impressive growth in both production and sales. In the first three quarters, it produced 95,880 vehicles and sold 94,112 units, marking an increase of 145.87% and 153.96%, respectively, compared to the previous year.
Guangzhou Honda came in second in terms of growth, with production reaching 141,210 units and sales hitting 137,913 units during the same period. These figures represent an increase of 72.38% and 69.53%, respectively. Meanwhile, Shanghai GM saw its production rise by 41.26% and sales jump by 48.76%. Chery Automobile also performed well, with production increasing by 20.39% and sales rising by 43.34%.
Despite these positive developments, some major players have struggled this year. Although Shanghai Volkswagen maintained its position as the top-selling brand in the first three quarters, with 287,657 units produced and 286,234 units sold, it still experienced a decline of 4.08% in production and 7.96% in sales compared to the previous year. Similarly, FAW-Volkswagen saw a 4.42% increase in production but a 2.98% drop in sales, with inventory levels reaching over 38,000 units—the highest among the top ten manufacturers.
As more domestic automakers enter the market, the market share of the top ten car manufacturers has decreased compared to last year, though it has improved from the first half of the year. In 2003, the top ten manufacturers accounted for 78.8% of national car production and 80.5% of total sales. By the first half of this year, their share had dropped to 72.8% for production and 72.3% for sales. By the end of the third quarter, they accounted for 71.7% of sedan production and 75.1% of total auto sales, showing a slight recovery.
