Iran resumes natural gas exports to Turkey
Three weeks after halting natural gas exports to Turkey, Iran resumed supplies on January 27, but at a significantly reduced level compared to normal operations. According to French media reports, the flow was restored around 4 p.m. local time on the 27th, with daily deliveries ranging between 1.5 to 2 million cubic meters—far below the usual 29 million cubic meters per day. Turkish Energy Ministry officials expressed hope that the supply would gradually return to normal in the coming days.
The interruption began on January 7 when Iran suspended exports due to severe weather conditions and a surge in domestic demand. Turkmenistan also halted its gas shipments to Turkey for similar reasons, further straining the country’s energy supply. As a result, Turkey had to suspend its own gas exports to Greece and increase imports from Russia to meet its needs.
Since December 2001, Iran has supplied natural gas to Turkey via a pipeline connecting Tabriz in northwestern Iran to Ankara, the capital of Turkey. The two countries have plans to construct a second pipeline to enhance their energy cooperation and ensure more stable supplies in the future.
