Wuhan's bio-chemical industry belt gradually became a scale
Recently, a reporter learned from the Hubei Provincial Development and Reform Commission that the province is set to develop a "Bio Valley" stretching from Guanshan in Wuhan to Gezhou in Ezhou. This initiative will focus on key biological industries such as bio-agriculture, bio-pharmaceuticals, and bio-manufacturing. The project aims to achieve an annual output value of 100 billion yuan by 2015, effectively recreating a new "light valley" in the region.
This development marks another large-scale integrated industrial zone within the Wuhan City Circle Pilot Area, following the success of the Wuhan Optical Valley. Liu Zhaolin, deputy director of the Hubei Provincial Development and Reform Commission, stated that the "Bio Valley" will be built upon the foundation of the Wuhan National Biological Industry Base. After the Spring Festival, key base companies and parks will be officially named and given priority support to accelerate growth.
Starting this year, the Hubei provincial government has significantly increased the scale of the "Special Biological Industry Fund" from 30 million to 50 million yuan. Currently, more than 300 bio-enterprises operate in the Huangdonghu District of Wuhan, including 15 listed companies and over 20 enterprises with sales revenue exceeding 100 million yuan. In 2005, the district’s annual output value reached over 190 billion yuan, accounting for nearly half of the province's total biological industry output.
The area is also home to more than 30 biotechnology R&D institutions, including the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Wuhan Aquatic Institute, along with 13 key laboratories and 11 academicians from the two academies in the field of biotechnology. The core of the "Bio Valley" lies in the Dongdong Lake area within the Wuhan Donghu High-tech Zone. Several specialized parks, such as the Guannan Biopharmaceutical Park, Nanhu Biological Agricultural Park, Jiangxia Modern Traditional Chinese Medicine Park, and Gedian Chemical Synthetic Innovative Pharmaceutical Park, have already been established and are gradually taking shape.
This ambitious project highlights Hubei's commitment to becoming a major player in the global bio-industry, leveraging its existing strengths and fostering innovation through strategic investment and regional collaboration.
