Wuhan's bio-chemical industry belt gradually became a scale
Recently, a reporter learned from the Hubei Provincial Development and Reform Commission that the province is set to develop a "Bio Valley" stretching from Guanshan in Wuhan to Gezhou in Ezhou. This initiative will focus on key biological industries, including bio-agriculture, biopharmaceuticals, and bio-manufacturing. By 2015, the area is expected to generate an annual output value of 100 billion yuan, effectively recreating a "Biotech Valley" similar to the famous "Optical Valley" in Wuhan.
This project marks another large-scale integrated industry development within the Wuhan City Circle Pilot Area, following the success of the Wuhan Optical Valley. Liu Zhaolin, deputy director of the Hubei Provincial Development and Reform Commission, stated that the "Bio Valley" will be built upon the foundation of the Wuhan National Biological Industry Base. After the Spring Festival, key companies and parks within the base will be officially recognized and given priority support.
Starting this year, the Hubei provincial government has increased the scale of the "Special Biological Industry Fund" from 30 million to 50 million yuan. The Huandonghu District in Wuhan alone is home to over 300 bio-enterprises, including 15 listed companies and more than 20 enterprises with annual sales exceeding 100 million yuan. In 2005, the district's annual output value reached over 190 billion yuan, accounting for half of the province’s total biotechnology output.
The region is also rich in research institutions, with over 30 biotech R&D centers such as the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Wuhan Aquatic Institute. There are 13 key laboratories and 11 academicians from the two academies working in the field of biotechnology. The core area of the "Bio Valley" is located in the Dongdong Lake area within the Wuhan Donghu High-tech Zone. Several specialized parks, including the Guannan Biopharmaceutical Park, Nanhu Biological Agricultural Park, Jiangxia Modern TCM Park, and Gedian Chemical Synthetic Pharmaceutical Park, have already been established and are forming a solid foundation for future growth.
