Machine tool industry seizes opportunities in automotive aluminum ring processing market
It's encouraging to see the vast market potential in the automotive industry, where hundreds of millions of aluminum wheels are machined annually using machine tools. Last year, Fuyu successfully developed three vertical lathes in quick succession, and Far Eastern Machinery has continued to invest heavily in technology. The company is preparing to launch a vertical lathe with an automatic table exchange in September, specifically designed for large-scale aluminum rim processing. This new model emphasizes superior processing efficiency compared to competitors, aiming to challenge established players like Taichung Seiki and other manufacturers in the market.
Zhuang Guohui, Chairman of Far East Machinery, highlighted that CNC horizontal aluminum wheel processing machines have always been the core strength of the company. During its peak years, Far East held a 47% market share in Taiwan. However, when Taichung Seiki shifted its focus to vertical lathes for larger rims, Far East struggled to keep up with the technological advancements, leading to a decline in market position.
Fortunately, the company hasn't lost its competitive edge in machine tool manufacturing. After refocusing its efforts, the subsidiary recently unveiled a new prototype of a CNC vertical aluminum wheel processing machine. It is currently undergoing final testing, with a key feature being an automatic table exchange system. Through specialized design, the switching time between two aluminum wheels has been reduced by four seconds compared to industry standards, significantly boosting processing efficiency.
Zhuang Guohui believes that global automobile production has reached 60 to 70 million units annually. With each vehicle having four tires and one spare, the annual demand for car rims exceeds 300 million, with at least half of them being aluminum wheels. Far East’s newly designed vertical lathe is lighter—only half the weight of industry standard models—and offers better performance. After its launch in September, the company expects strong market demand, and it is confident that future sales will be able to match or even surpass those of its competitors.
In addition, after developing three vertical lathes, Fuyu, a manufacturer of grinding machines, saw limited sales growth over the past six months. To break through, Fuyu decided to bring in Japanese consultants to provide factory services and improve its rim processing capabilities by 20%. They also adopted a trial-and-try approach, allowing customers to test the new machine in the Fuyu factory until they were fully satisfied. This strategy helped build customer trust and expand their domestic market presence.
