Rationally Utilize Resources to Ease Energy Contradictions and Promote Sustainable Development of China's Economy (2)
He believes that accelerating the reform of the energy pricing system is a crucial step toward promoting sustainable energy development in China. Over the past two decades, China has made significant efforts to marketize its energy sector and reform pricing mechanisms, achieving some progress. However, the government’s high level of control over energy prices has also slowed down the pace of marketization. With energy demand growing faster than GDP, China's energy industry is now facing increasingly fierce international competition. In this context, failing to accelerate price reforms could weaken the competitiveness of Chinese energy companies, putting them at a disadvantage in the global market.
Gao Chengzhi emphasized that, given the scarcity of coal and oil, the use of efficient, clean natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) represents an ideal choice. However, this transition must be supported by a more market-oriented approach. By opening up the market and aligning pricing with international standards, more clean energy sources can enter the Chinese market, ensuring a stable supply of energy to support economic growth.
Zhang Yue, president of Broad Air Conditioning Co., Ltd., stated that the development of clean energy is a powerful strategy for driving sustainable development in China. However, the country currently lacks a robust pricing system and supportive policies to fully promote clean energy. Due to the absence of clear policy guidance, the development of clean energy has been relatively slow. He suggested that while introducing policies to encourage clean energy, the government should also provide support for both the production and consumption of clean energy, making it more accessible and affordable for the public and thereby accelerating the industry’s growth.
In response to the question of how governments and enterprises should promote energy-saving industries in the absence of domestic energy resources, experts and business leaders at yesterday’s summit proposed several key measures. First, increasing public awareness through education on energy conservation is essential, as it plays a vital role in fostering a culture of sustainability. Second, establishing building energy efficiency standards—such as limiting annual electricity consumption per building—can significantly reduce energy use. For example, if the annual electricity cost per square meter of housing is kept below 30 yuan, substantial energy savings can be achieved. Third, implementing tax incentives to encourage individuals and businesses to adopt energy-saving products can boost consumer interest and drive innovation in the sector.
