Oshkosh moving Medtec and Specialty Vehicles to Florida
Firegeezer.com reports that Oshkosh Corporation is shutting down its Medtec ambulance facilities in Pigeon, Michigan, and Goshen, Indiana, and moving production to the Pierce Manufacturing facility in Bradenton, Florida. This move marks a significant shift in the company’s operations, as it consolidates its Medtec Ambulance unit with the Pierce operation.
The relocation is expected to bring between 100 and 150 new manufacturing and office jobs to Bradenton. In exchange for this expansion, Oshkosh is set to receive up to $1.44 million in economic development incentives. The funding will come from the state of Florida ($1.07 million), Manatee County ($333,732), and Pinellas County ($40,000).
Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles, which operates plants in Harvey and Calumet City, Illinois, is also relocating its operations to Florida. The division, known for producing high-tech mobile medical imaging units and transportable trailers, will merge with Frontline’s Clearwater facility, which specializes in command and communications vehicles and broadcast equipment.
To support the new jobs in Clearwater, Oshkosh has committed to paying an average annual salary of at least $57,897—150% of the average wage in Pinellas County, which stands at $38,598. This move is seen as a major boost for the local economy, especially in areas like Manatee County, where unemployment is currently at 12.6%.
According to the St. Petersburg Times, which first reported the news, the information hasn’t yet been officially posted on either Oshkosh or Pierce’s websites. However, the details have already sparked discussions among local officials and workers who are preparing for the changes.
Brandenton.com also covered the story, highlighting that Pierce Manufacturing is expected to begin hiring as early as March. With over 18,000 unemployed residents in Manatee County, the new jobs are considered critical for the region’s recovery.
John Daggett, a spokesperson for Oshkosh Corp., confirmed that the consolidation will lead to layoffs across the company’s Midwest locations. Specifically, Medtec Ambulances will cut 45 employees at its Goshen headquarters, 60 at its Goshen plant, and 70 at its White Pigeon, Michigan facility. Meanwhile, Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles will lay off 80 employees in Illinois.
This restructuring reflects a broader trend of companies shifting operations to states offering more favorable business environments and financial incentives. While the move brings new opportunities to Florida, it also signals difficult times for workers in the Midwest who may soon be affected by these changes.
