Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District news (more)

Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:

On Wednesday, the Cook County zoning and building committee voted unanimously 14-0 to reject a special-use permit and zoning variances sought by the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. The proposal aimed to build a new fire station at 36 E. Dundee Road, near a middle school and an early childhood center.

The fire district argued that the third station would improve emergency response times for residents in Inverness and surrounding areas. However, the location sparked strong opposition from school administrators and parents. Brian Harris, superintendent of District 220, urged the commission to deny the request, stating that the schools wouldn’t have been built there if the fire station had been present first. He also encouraged the fire district to consider a study suggesting a better location in the western part of the district.

In a statement, Barrington Countryside officials called the decision a setback for public safety. They accused a small group of individuals of spreading misleading information for short-term gains, claiming it ignored the long-term needs of the community.

The fire district had planned to use the foundation of a house purchased in 2016 for $500,000. The new station was expected to cost between $900,000 and $1.1 million.

District 220 formally objected to the project, citing concerns over traffic congestion and potential impacts on property values. At a previous meeting, school staff and teachers raised worries about noise from the firehouse affecting the early learning center, which serves some of the most vulnerable children in the district.

County Commissioner Kevin Morrison noted that his office received over 50 calls and 70 emails opposing the plan. Although the county’s advisory zoning board had recommended approval under the condition that sirens not be used, a site visit and discussions with both sides led him to believe the project was not suitable.

Barrington Countryside Fire Chief James Kreher said the department will now look for an alternative site to serve Inverness and the eastern and southern parts of the district. He also mentioned that District 220 has shown interest in purchasing the Dundee Road property.
