Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com: When it comes to the skills required to fight fires and save lives, being physically prepared is just as important as having the right abilities on the job. Firefighters around the world are showing off their readiness at this year’s Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge (SFCC), a competition designed to promote firefighter fitness and highlight the demanding physical nature of the profession. Firefighters are among the most dedicated public servants, often pushing themselves to develop both technical and physical skills to excel in their roles. Some even take this passion further by competing for national titles in events like the SFCC. One of the standout teams in the 2019 season is the Huntley Fire team, which includes firefighters Josh Roddy, Scott Sundquist, Eric Rose, and Eric Blaser. They were the first Illinois team to win the Grand National Championship at the SFCC, an event that ESPN has called "the toughest two minutes in sports." Each member of the team has completed the challenge in under 100 seconds, earning them a spot in the prestigious Lion's Den — the highest individual achievement in the competition. The SFCC consists of seven intense events that simulate real-life firefighting tasks. These include climbing a five-story tower with full gear, lifting a heavy hose pack, descending the tower while hitting every step, using a mallet to push a steel beam, running through a slalom course in full gear, carrying a charged hose to spray a target, and finally transporting a life-sized mannequin over a long distance. Each challenge tests strength, speed, and precision under pressure. Beyond the competition, the SFCC also promotes family involvement. Many regional events feature a Kids Firefighter Challenge, where children can try out modified versions of the same tasks, wearing appropriately sized helmets and turnout gear. It’s a fun and educational way to introduce young people to the fire service. The sport is open to all firefighters, whether they want to compete individually or as part of a team of three to five members. Relay and tandem teams are also welcome at each event. Registration is now open for the 2019 season kick-off at the FDIC in Indianapolis, Indiana, from April 11–13.
