According to reports from abc7chicago.com, an explosion occurred in an asphalt tank at the Seneca Petroleum plant in Lemont early Tuesday morning. One person was killed and another was taken to Silver Cross Hospital for treatment. OSHA officials confirmed that both the deceased and the injured were contractors working with M&J Industrial Services on-site. The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Dru A. Worker from Homewood.
Multiple emergency agencies responded to the scene, and it took several hours to bring the fire under control. Firefighters stated that no hazardous materials were released, and there is no public safety risk. OSHA and ComEd were also present at the location. Notably, Seneca Petroleum had no prior OSHA violations at this facility.
