Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com: When it comes to the skills required to fight fires and save lives, preparedness is just as important as physical strength. These two qualities are what firefighter teams around the world are working hard to demonstrate at this year’s Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge (SFCC). Designed to promote fitness among firefighters and raise public awareness of the demanding nature of their work, the event has become a major highlight in the firefighting community. Firefighters are among the most dedicated public servants, and many of them train rigorously to master both the physical and technical aspects of their job. Some even take on the challenge of competing for national titles in events like the SFCC. One such team is the 2018 Grand National Champions from Huntley, Illinois. The team—comprised of firefighters Josh Roddy, Scott Sundquist, Eric Rose, and Eric Blaser—has been preparing for the 2019 season. Known as the Huntley Fire team, they made history by becoming the first Illinois team to win the Grand National title at the SFCC, an event ESPN calls "the toughest two minutes in sports." Each member of the team has completed the course in under 100 seconds, earning them a spot in the prestigious Lion’s Den, the highest individual achievement in the competition. The SFCC features seven intense challenges that mirror real-life firefighting scenarios. Competitors must climb a five-story tower while wearing full gear, including a 42-pound hose pack and a breathing apparatus. They also have to hoist a heavy hose up the tower, descend while hitting every step, push a steel beam with a mallet, run through cones in full gear, carry a charged hose through doors, and finally, transport a life-sized mannequin over a long distance. These tasks test not only strength but also speed, coordination, and endurance. Family-friendly and inclusive, the SFCC also includes a Kids Firefighter Challenge at many regional events. Children can wear appropriately sized helmets and turnout gear to participate in modified versions of the main events, giving them a taste of what it's like to be a firefighter. The competition is open to all active firefighters, whether they want to compete individually or as part of a team of three to five members. Relay and tandem teams are also welcome. Registration is now open for the upcoming season, starting with the FDIC conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, from April 11 to 13.
