The environment needs lime but the lime kiln, the Americans do it.

Lime comprises quicklime and hydrated lime, limestone calcination at a high temperature to calcium oxide (CaO) and carbon dioxide (CO2), wherein the calcium oxide is called quicklime; the calcium oxide with water to generate calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH) 2), called Slaked lime or hydrated lime. China's industrial development of flue gas desulfurization, sewage treatment and other environmental protection can not be separated from lime, but in order to reduce pollution such as smoke and gas, but also to shut down the lime kiln, how to resolve this contradiction? Americans have a way to see how they do?

First, only 74 lime kiln in the country

Excluding the production of self-produced slaked lime, the US lime production in 2017 is expected to exceed 18 million tons (less than 20 million tons), with an output value of 2.3 billion US dollars. By the end of 2017, 28 companies produced lime, of which 18 were sold to the market and 10 were self-produced (for example, sugar companies), which had 74 old lime kilns in 28 states and Puerto Rico.

Second, five major companies concentrate on producing lime

Five large lime companies produce lime in 21 states in the United States, accounting for 76% of US lime production, with production in the states of Missouri, Alabama, Ohio, Texas, and Kentucky.

Three, one year only shut down three lime kiln

Due to the increase in slaked lime production, domestic lime production in the United States increased slightly in 2016 compared to 2016. In 2016, three companies shut down three lime production plants, reducing the lime kiln from 77 in 2016 to 74 in 2017. A company shut down a quicklime and light calcium carbonate production plant in Tacoma, Wash., to focus on producing slaked lime; a sugar cooperative shut down the sugar beet production line in Torrington, Connecticut, and removed a matching one. A lime kiln (in the process of sugar production, lime milk is used to increase the pH of the line product to remove colloidal impurities); a company shuts down the Pottston lime production line in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, where only slaked lime is produced. In June 2017, another company acquired the Pottston slaked lime production line. Slaked lime is a dry calcium hydroxide powder produced by the reaction of quicklime and an appropriate amount of water in a hydrator for use in the chemical, construction and environmental industries. In 2017, slaked lime was mainly used for power plant flue gas desulfurization (13%), production of building materials such as mortar, gypsum and plaster (10%), wastewater treatment (6%) and drinking water (5%).

Fourth, replace lime with limestone

Limestone can replace lime in many applications such as farming, plasticizing and desulfurization. Limestone contains little active substance and has poor activity. Compared with active lime, it is not enough, but limestone is much cheaper than lime. Calcined gypsum plaster and mortar in the industry, cement, cement kiln dust, fly ash, lime kiln dust in the construction, of magnesium hydroxide in pH control, steel manufacture as a flux magnesia, lime can be substituted.

5. Steel and environmental protection are the main uses.

Sorted by market size, American lime is used in steel manufacturing, flue gas desulfurization, construction, chemicals (fertilizer, glass, Paper and pulp, light calcium carbonate and sugar), water treatment and non-ferrous smelting.

Six, lime Canada imports more

In 2013-2016, US lime imports accounted for 95% of Canada, Mexico accounted for 5%, and other countries were insignificant.

Seven, more lime recovery

The US paper mill produces a large amount of lime, some urban water treatment plants soften the sludge to produce lime, and the calcium carbide industry produces slaked lime to produce quicklime, which is completely recycled.

Eight, China's annual output of lime 230 million tons

The world's limestone and dolomite resources are very large and sufficient for lime production. The world's lime production is large, with a production of 350 million tons in 2017 and an annual lime production of 230 million tons, accounting for 65.7% of the world's total production.
