The first set of methanol-made low-carbon olefins was successfully installed
On August 24, the Shaanxi Provincial Government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences held a press conference at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, announcing the successful operation of the world's first 10,000-ton methanol-to-olefins (DMTO) industrialization project. This groundbreaking technology, developed with independent intellectual property rights, has completed nearly two years of testing and has demonstrated exceptional performance. It has passed national technological assessments and is recognized as leading-edge in global industrial innovation.
The achievement was realized by Shaanxi Xinxing Coal Chemical Technology Development Co., Ltd., leveraging the pilot results from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the engineering expertise of Sinopec Luoyang Petrochemical Engineering Company. The construction was carried out by Shaanxi Chemical Construction Company, marking a significant milestone in China’s coal chemical industry.
Ethylene and propylene are among the most critical basic chemicals globally, traditionally derived from oil. The DMTO technology offers an alternative by using coal or natural gas as feedstock, significantly reducing reliance on petroleum. Research on this technology began in the 1980s at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, with two generations of pilot tests already completed. Experts have praised the technology for its stability, safety, and advanced performance, calling it a major breakthrough with independent IP.
This 10,000-ton industrial unit is currently the only one of its kind worldwide. Its success opens new pathways for China’s olefin industry, helping to reduce oil imports and enhance energy security. According to Yuan Zhizhong, Chairman of Xinxing Coal Chemical, the DMTO process is economically more efficient than traditional naphtha cracking. Even when crude oil prices dropped to $35 per barrel, the project remained viable if coal costs stayed below RMB 400 per ton.
The event drew widespread attention, with high-level officials and industry leaders in attendance, including Gu Xiulian, Zhang Qiming, and Governor Yuan Chunqing. Representatives from major energy companies and financial institutions also participated, underscoring the significance of this technological advancement.
