2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 1-8-17 (part 4)

It was another brutal winter day in Chicago as firefighters responded to the 2-11 Alarm fire on January 8, 2017. The icy conditions made the already challenging situation even more treacherous, but the brave men and women of the Chicago Fire Department rose to the occasion. I’ve gathered some incredible photos from the scene taken by Tim Olk and Dan McInerney, two photographers who truly captured the intensity and grit of the operation. The first image shows Tower Ladder 14 hard at work amidst the chaos. Tim Olk’s shot perfectly encapsulates the determination of the crew battling the blaze. In another photo also captured by Tim, we see Engine 113 in action, its crew focused on extinguishing the flames. There’s something particularly striking about how the cold weather has turned everything into an icy spectacle—vehicles and equipment encased in frost, creating a surreal atmosphere. Dan McInerney also contributed some stunning shots. His photo of Squad 2A Snorkel is particularly eye-catching, showcasing the intricate dance of water spraying up into the air, creating what looks like a rainbow against the gray backdrop of the fire. Another memorable moment is when he captured the aftermath of the fire, with firefighters completely covered in ice, their faces etched with exhaustion but pride. One of my favorite images comes from Tim again, this time focusing on the Rainbow effect created by the water spray. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of destruction, there can be moments of beauty. Another powerful image shows firefighters covered in ice, standing in front of Engine 117, their expressions a mix of fatigue and resolve. The final set of images really drive home the scale and impact of the fire. Tim’s wide-angle shot of the aftermath gives us a sense of just how extensive the damage was. You can almost feel the biting cold through the screen, imagining the physical toll it must have taken on everyone involved. As always, these photos serve as a testament to the dedication and courage of our first responders. They face unimaginable challenges every single day, and it’s important to take a moment to appreciate their hard work and sacrifice. I’m grateful to Tim and Dan for sharing such compelling visuals from the scene. Stay safe out there, firefighters!
