The demonstrators were calling for racial justice and reform in policing. Dozens of people were taken into custody during the protests, many of them participating in a sit-in that blocked the middle of a street. Their aim was to disrupt the largest gathering of public safety officials in the country. Several hundred protesters marched from the Chicago Police headquarters at 35th and Michigan to McCormick Place, where the International Association of Chiefs of Police held its annual event. This conference brought together over 14,000 public safety officers. The protest was organized by local community groups urging police departments across the nation to change how they interact with communities of color. "We want our voices to be heard, to show the strength of a united coalition, and to remind this powerful organization that black lives matter," said protester Maria Hadden. "We’re pushing for less funding for policing and more investment in community services." Another group also staged a sit-in, blocking traffic at Cermak and Indiana Avenue. Police eventually arrested about a dozen individuals after they refused to move from the road.
