This report comes from Eric Haak: On Sunday afternoon, June 2nd, firefighters from Chicago’s 6th Battalion faced a challenging rescue situation at the intersection of 53rd and Union. A tree trimmer became stuck upside down at a moderate height with a broken leg. Truck 18 quickly arrived on the scene and used its ladder to support the victim while Squad 5 and Tower Ladder 39 made their way to assist. With the man's weight supported by Truck 18’s aerial device, rescuers began the careful process of freeing him. Eventually, Tower Ladder 39 was able to position its basket beneath the victim and safely lower him to the ground. The entire operation took approximately 45 minutes. One of the biggest challenges for Tower Ladder 39 was the unstable ground. They had to use a nearby vacant lot that was soft and muddy due to recent heavy rain. To stabilize their equipment, they used fence posts being installed on the lot, which helped keep the tower ladder steady during the rescue. The incident highlights the teamwork and quick thinking of the firefighters involved. Despite the difficult conditions, they managed to bring the injured worker to safety without any additional injuries. These types of rescues are always stressful, but the coordination between units made all the difference. Photos from the scene show the dramatic moment the worker was hanging from the tree, as well as the efforts of the firefighters in action.
