Demonstrators gathered to demand racial justice and call for reform in policing practices. Several dozen people were arrested during the protests, many of them involved in a sit-in that blocked traffic in the middle of the street. The demonstrators aimed to disrupt the largest gathering of law enforcement leaders in the country. Hundreds of protesters marched from the Chicago Police headquarters on 35th Street and Michigan Avenue toward McCormick Place, where the International Association of Chiefs of Police held its annual event. With over 14,000 public safety officers in attendance, the protest was organized by local community groups urging police departments nationwide to rethink how they engage with communities of color. “We want our voices to be heard,†said Maria Hadden, a protester. “This is about showing that Black lives matter and pushing this powerful organization to change policies that affect us every day. We believe more resources should go into community services rather than policing.†Another group staged a sit-in near Cermak and Indiana streets, blocking the road for several hours. Police eventually arrested around a dozen individuals after they refused to move, leading to further tension between protesters and law enforcement.
