Chicago Still Alarm 9-10-11
Tim Olk was, for once, in the perfect spot at the perfect time yesterday morning when a fire alarm was called at 510 S. California. The Fire Alarm Office dispatched a Still Alarm, and Tim was nearby, arriving just behind Engine 107. Upon arrival, he found a two-story "ordinary" building that was vacant, with an adjacent structure on one side and an empty lot on the other. Thick smoke was pouring from the second floor, indicating a serious situation.
Fire companies responded quickly and managed to contain the fire at a Still Alarm level. Tim captured a few photos of the scene and has a full gallery available here. His images give a clear view of the conditions firefighters faced upon arrival.
The first photo shows Truck 36 heading to the roof to ventilate the building. They encountered heavy smoke right from the start. Another image highlights the building's surroundings—on one side was a neighboring structure, while the other side was an open, empty lot. This made the response more complex, as crews had to be cautious about potential spread.
A third photo captures the fire department in action, showing how quickly they were able to suppress the flames and keep the incident under control. Tim’s photos offer a real-time look at how well the crews handled the situation. It’s always reassuring to see such a quick and effective response.
