2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 2-12-18
Chicago firefighters worked through the night on a major fire at a commercial building located at 4749 W. Lake Street just after midnight on Monday, February 12, 2018. The blaze was first spotted by Truck 29 while the unit was returning to the station from another call—a Still & Box Alarm incident. By the time they arrived, the entire structure was already engulfed in flames, and the alarm was eventually upgraded to a 2-11. Shortly after emergency crews arrived, the building collapsed, adding to the danger of the situation.
To combat the intense fire, multiple units were deployed, including two multi-purpose ladders and elevated master streams from Tower Ladder 5, Tower Ladder 14, Squad 2A, and Truck 29. Despite their efforts, one firefighter from the 5-11 Club Support Service Unit suffered an injury when he lost his balance on a patch of ice and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The scene was chaotic, with crews working under difficult conditions, especially as temperatures remained low. Firefighters could be seen directing powerful streams of water onto the burning structure, while others managed equipment and assisted in rescue efforts. Several spare apparatuses were also on site, ready to support the operation if needed.
Photos from the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro, show the intensity of the fire, the presence of fire trucks, and the challenging environment in which the crews operated. Images include shots of the fire hose running beneath the elevated train tracks, firefighters in action, and the aftermath of the collapse. These images provide a vivid look at the scale of the event and the dedication of the responding teams.
