3-Alarm fire in Franklin Park, 8-10-20

I just saw this update from the Schiller Park Firefighters Local 5230 Facebook page about an intense incident they were part of earlier today. On August 10th, 2020, there was a major three-alarm fire at an industrial building in Franklin Park. The Schiller Park firefighters provided mutual aid, and it sounds like they played a crucial role in getting that fire under control. One of their trucks, Truck 5, sent crew members inside with a 2 1/2-inch hose line to directly tackle the flames. Meanwhile, another team from Schiller Park worked alongside the Franklin Park crews to position ladders and even got onto the roof of the building. From there, they made some critical trench cuts in the roof, which allowed them to use a handheld hose to extinguish all the remaining hotspots. It seems like teamwork between the two departments really paid off in bringing the fire under control. They were on the scene for around three hours, and during that time, a pretty nasty wind and rainstorm rolled through the area too. Back at the station, the rest of the Schiller Park firefighters who were on duty had their hands full dealing with numerous storm-related emergencies. There were downed power lines, fallen trees, and plenty of medical calls to respond to. It’s always a challenge to juggle different types of emergencies at once. What struck me as particularly responsible was how they handle things after such incidents. Once they’re back at the station, they make sure every piece of equipment is thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and readied for the next call. And as an added precaution against occupational hazards like cancer, every firefighter is required to wash their gear. It’s small details like this that show just how seriously they take safety. Attached are some incredible photos taken by Tim Olk that really capture the scale and intensity of the fire. You can see the massive plumes of smoke, the firefighters working hard to contain the blaze, and the sheer size of the warehouse involved. It’s a powerful reminder of the dedication and bravery these first responders bring to their jobs every single day. I’m grateful for their efforts and hope everyone involved remained safe throughout the ordeal. When you think about everything they faced—both the fire itself and the subsequent storm—it really puts into perspective just how challenging and unpredictable their work can be.
