3-Alarm fire in Lake Forest, January 28, 2014

Lake Forest firefighters responded to a reported basement fire on Tuesday afternoon at 180 W. Laurel Avenue. Upon arrival, the first unit found no visible flames from the outside but detected smoke upon entering the large home. Within about nine minutes, the alarm was escalated to a working still alarm, followed by a MABAS Box Alarm and then a second alarm as smoke began escaping from the roofline. A hydrant was located at the end of a long, winding driveway, which both the Lake Forest engine and Knollwood quint struggled to navigate. The fire was discovered in the void space beneath the first floor and later spread into walls on the second level. As a precaution, the alarm was upgraded to a third alarm to ensure additional units were on standby in case the fire became more challenging to control. Despite the cold weather—temperatures just above freezing with a severe windchill—the fire was quickly contained, preventing major structural damage. Firefighters worked tirelessly in the harsh conditions, showing their dedication and skill. Numerous fire departments from surrounding areas responded, including Lake Forest, Knollwood, Highwood, Mundelein, Lake Bluff, Libertyville, Beach Park, Highland Park, Grayslake, Lake Villa, Wauconda, Round Lake, Countryside, Gurnee, Great Lakes, Fox Lake, Lincolnshire, Northbrook, Long Grove, Barrington Countryside, and more. A Quad 2 Mobile Command Post and several chiefs also arrived to coordinate efforts. Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk captured the scene, providing valuable visual documentation of the incident. Photos show fire engines, ladder trucks, and crews working under difficult conditions. The full collection will soon be available on Larry Shapiro’s website. The response highlighted the strong collaboration between local fire departments and the professionalism of the crews involved. Despite the challenges, the fire was brought under control efficiently, showcasing the preparedness and expertise of emergency responders.
