Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire, 4-4-16

On Monday morning, April 4th, 2016, just after 2 AM, Chicago firefighters responded to a serious fire at a laundromat located at 5130 W. Fullerton Avenue. Upon arrival, they found heavy fire burning inside a one-story commercial building measuring 60 by 100 feet, featuring a bow-string truss roof. The structure had no immediate adjacent buildings, with open parking lots on both sides. Firefighters quickly began ventilating the roof and then transitioned to a defensive operation. Tower Ladder 14 was positioned to the west, while Squad 2A was set up to the east. A second tower ladder, Tower Ladder 23, was called in as an extra resource and placed at the front of the building. Two multi-purpose water units and three elevated master streams worked together for nearly two hours, dousing the flames. As the fire raged, heavy smoke and flames burst out of the front of the building, igniting a car parked along the curb. The local utility company was dispatched to shut off the gas supply, as the fire was fueled by a natural gas line near the front of the structure. Steve Redick and Larry Shapiro were on the scene capturing the event, with Steve sharing a short cellphone video that gives a glimpse of the intense firefighting efforts. More footage is expected to follow. Larry Shapiro also provided a collection of photos from the incident, showing the dramatic response and the aftermath. The scene featured several Chicago Fire Department units, including Engine 91, Engine 7, Truck 58, and the iconic E-One Cyclone II tower ladder, Tower Ladder 14. The crew used a snorkel unit, Squad 2A, and multiple high-pressure water systems to control the blaze. Despite their efforts, the building suffered significant damage. The fire highlighted the challenges of fighting fires in older structures with complex roof systems like the bow-string truss design.
