“Get Your Fix” Part 3 of 10: Carrier® 38APS/38APD

Part 3 of 10: Carrier® 38APS/38APD

Returning to our series on the top ten commercial OEM condenser coils with recurring service issues over the last decade, we now focus on the Carrier® 38APS/38APD series. This particular model takes the third spot on our list.

Carrier Gemini Main Image

Ranked among the commercial OEM condenser coils experiencing repeated problems is the Carrier® 38APS/38APD. Introduced by Carrier around 2012, the Gemini® Select commercial air-cooled, split-system condensing units were designed for use with Puron refrigerant (R-410A). Carrier marketed their Novation® heat exchanger design featuring microchannel (MCHX) condenser coils as a "robust, cost-effective alternative" to traditional coil designs. However, while customers may initially save money upon purchase, they often end up paying more in the long run due to frequent leaks, damage from foreign objects, and difficulties in making repairs.

Why did Carrier opt for Novation microchannel coils?

The financial benefits of Novation microchannel coils extend beyond just lower initial costs—they also enable mass production and reduce the overall refrigerant footprint. While environmental responsibility is commendable, shouldn't such innovations prioritize both sustainability and product reliability? That's a decision consumers should weigh carefully. At the very least, buyers deserve options when it comes to microchannel technology.

Time to #changethechannel

Nationwide Coils has extensive experience dealing with the Carrier 38APS/38APD, which inspired us to launch our microchannel conversion program. Our initiative allows customers to replace their all-aluminum fin coils with more durable copper tube, aluminum fin coils, enhancing reliability and ease of servicing without sacrificing OEM efficiency.

We can fabricate a copper tube coil that fits seamlessly with minimal re-piping and maintains the same capacity as the original microchannel coil. Although this setup requires approximately 20-30% more refrigerant and must be charged via sub-cooling, it eliminates persistent leaks, unreliable repairs, and costly downtime.

Smaller tonnage units are available in dual and single refrigeration circuits ranging from 025 to 065, while larger tonnage units are offered exclusively in dual refrigeration circuits, from 070 to 130.
