“Get Your Fix” Part 3 of 10: Carrier® 38APS/38APD

On our list of problem-prone OEM condenser coils sits the Carrier® 38APS/38APD series. Introduced by Carrier around 2012, the Gemini® Select commercial air-cooled, split-system condensing units came equipped with Puron refrigerant (R-410A). Carrier marketed their Novation® heat exchanger design, featuring microchannel (MCHX) condenser coils, as a "robust, cost-effective alternative to traditional coil designs." However, while customers might save money upfront, they often end up paying more in the long run due to frequent leaks, damage from foreign materials, and challenges with repairs.

Why did Carrier opt for Novation microchannel coils?

The cost-saving benefits of Novation microchannel coils not only facilitate mass production but also reduce the refrigerant footprint. While environmental responsibility is commendable, shouldn’t unit reliability and performance take precedence? This is something worth considering. At the very least, consumers deserve a choice when it comes to microchannel technology.

Time to #ChangeTheChannel

Nationwide Coils has extensive experience with the Carrier 38APS/38APD series, which motivated us to launch our #ChangeTheChannel program. This initiative allows customers to convert their all-aluminum fin coils into more durable copper tube, aluminum fin coils, enhancing reliability and ease of servicing while preserving OEM efficiency. We can fabricate a copper tube coil that fits seamlessly with minor re-piping and maintains the same capacity as the original microchannel coil. Although this approach requires an additional 20-30% refrigerant charge and necessitates sub-cooling charging, it eliminates recurring leaks, unreliable repairs, and costly downtime.

Smaller-tonnage units are available in dual and single refrigeration circuits ranging from 025 to 065, while larger-tonnage units are offered exclusively in dual refrigeration circuits from 070 to 130.
