House fire in Wheeling, 2-3-20
This morning, Wheeling firefighters rushed to 900 Valley Stream Drive in response to a report of a basement fire. When they arrived, thick smoke was already visible, prompting the dispatch to upgrade the call to an active fire. Flames erupted from a bottom-level window of the split-level home, accompanied by heavy smoke billowing out. Firefighters swiftly deployed two hoses into the structure, managing to bring the blaze under control within minutes. The overhaul process, which involved thoroughly checking for remaining hotspots and cleaning up both inside and outside the property, proved to be quite extensive.
The firefighting units on the scene included Wheeling Engine 23, Engine 42, Truck 24, Ambulance 23, Ambulance 24, Battalion 24, and Chief 2401. Mutual aid support came from neighboring departments such as Buffalo Grove Tower 25, Prospect Heights Engine 39, Squad 9, Ambulance 9, Battalion 9, and Northbrook Ambulance 10. Their collaboration ensured a swift and coordinated effort to contain the situation.
Attached are several images capturing different moments of the firefighting operation. These photos, taken by Larry Shapiro, showcase firefighters entering the burning building with their hoses, preparing additional lines, and even using specialized equipment like ladders and saws to manage the intense situation. One particularly striking image shows a Buffalo Grove firefighter wielding a saw, emphasizing the technical skills required during such emergencies. Another photo highlights Wheeling FD Lieutenant James Thelen, who likely played a crucial role in directing operations.
These visuals not only document the bravery and professionalism of the firefighters but also provide insight into the complex challenges faced when battling residential fires. It’s a reminder of the dedication and teamwork essential to keeping communities safe.
