Lake Zurich 2nd Alarm house fire in Hawthorn Woods 6-23-13
Late Sunday night, the Lake Zurich Fire Department received an emergency call about a fire that had broken out on the back deck of a residence located at 11 Rosewood Drive in Hawthorn Woods. By the time the first responding units arrived, they discovered that the flames had already spread from the deck to the house itself. Fortunately, all the occupants had managed to evacuate safely. This particular part of Hawthorn Woods lacks fire hydrants, which prompted the department to upgrade the incident to a higher alert level. A total of seven water tankers were eventually dispatched to the scene to assist with firefighting efforts.
Initially, Wauconda’s tower ladder was positioned to use an elevated master stream to combat the spreading fire. However, due to insufficient water pressure, the strategy had to be revised, and the firefighting operation transitioned to using handheld hoses instead. To address the water supply issue, two portable tanks were deployed, and a tanker shuttle system was established with support from a Lake Zurich engine. The fire ultimately engulfed the entire rear portion of the attic and roof, causing significant damage to several rooms on the second floor.
A community member kindly shared two early photographs taken at the scene, while Larry Shapiro contributed additional images and a video documenting the event. One of the early photos clearly shows the roof and attic heavily involved in flames. Another image captured from the street provides a glimpse into the initial stages of the fire.
As the situation evolved, Buffalo Grove Tower 25 took up a position in the rear to monitor conditions as part of the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). Meanwhile, firefighters worked diligently to extinguish hotspots in various sectors of the property. Water tankers from neighboring towns like Grayslake and Fox Lake played crucial roles in supplying the necessary resources. One particularly striking image highlights Lake Zurich's engine drafting water from portable tanks, showcasing their innovative approach to managing the limited water supply.
Despite the challenges, progress was made, as evidenced by subsequent photos that revealed much of the fire had been contained. Deerfield firefighters focused their efforts on specific areas where embers still smoldered. The dedication of these teams ensured that the situation remained under control, minimizing further damage to the structure.
