World’s tallest firefighting aerial device

Dan McInerney came across this fascinating article about the world's tallest firefighting aerial:

There’s got to be a good reason you’d find yourself in an open-air basket 367 feet above the ground. While hot air ballooning is one possibility, you might also be up there on a Bronto S-112 HLA, fixing damage on the roof of the world’s most iconic cathedral.

Whether you're comparing it to the Amiens Cathedral or stacking the entire Fighting Irish team on top of each other, the Bronto S-112 HLA still holds the title as the tallest. Built by Finnish company Bronto, the S-112 HLA (High Level Articulated) is the world’s highest-reaching basket lift. It doesn’t just go straight up—it can bend its arm at a 90° angle, reaching 290 feet high (around 26 stories), and extend out to a working radius of 82 feet—roughly the length of three Minke Whales or two school buses carrying 72 kids each. This makes it perfect for accessing hard-to-reach areas like the underside of wind turbine blades.

Of course, such a high platform needs a rock-solid base. That’s why the lifting system is mounted on a Mercedes-Benz 76.60 9-axle commercial truck chassis with five steered and four driven axles. The whole rig weighs a solid 75,000 kg—about 82 tons or the equivalent of two Doosan Moxy articulated dump trucks. It also features an automatic leveling system that sets up in under a minute (because we all know how important it is to get that cat down from the tree fast!) and a Telecontrol system with a visual interactive display.

From Bronto:

Bronto Skylift’s High Level Articulated Range represents the ultimate in high-rise rescue and firefighting capability. It’s an ideal choice for fire brigades operating in large cities. With superior vertical and horizontal reach at any height, fast and safe operations, and an integrated corrosion-resistant waterway, the HLA range offers unmatched performance. Built on a standard truck chassis, the HLA unit remains flexible and compact, allowing it to reach emergency sites via regular roads and streets. With the autojacking function, the unit stabilizes in just 40 seconds and can perform rescues from the height of 33 floors. Currently, the range covers working heights from 81 to 112 meters. It’s amazing to see how far technology has come in emergency response. The Bronto S-112 HLA isn’t just a machine—it’s a lifeline in the sky, ready to tackle challenges that were once impossible to reach. Whether it’s for firefighting or rescue, this aerial is truly a marvel of modern engineering.
