2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 1-8-17 (part 2)

As I drove home from work that evening, I came across a fire scene that had already been brought under control. The fire broke out in a two-story wooden structure measuring 25 feet by 70 feet. Flames had engulfed the second floor and spread to the roof. A partial collapse occurred at the rear of the building, which appeared to have enclosed porches. I remember there was some confusion regarding a 2-11 call directed to a neighboring house to the east, but this was quickly resolved once units arrived on the scene. All the suppression vehicles assigned to the 2-11 were parked along Chicago Avenue in front of Engine 117's station. One interesting detail was Engine 83's response with a light utility vehicle. Given the icy conditions, where everything seemed frozen solid, and the sun just beginning to rise over the fireground, it was clear it was bitterly cold outside. Engine 117 was the first to arrive and deployed three lines, while Engine 96 moved down to support Tower Ladder 14. Engine 113 supplied water to the aerial ladder. Attached are some photos taken by Dan McInerney showing the aftermath of the fire, particularly the collapsed section at the back of the house. You can also see Engine 96's crew operating a hose on the second floor, and Engine 117's team moving a 2.5-inch handline. Additionally, Squad 2 is positioned in the alley to the west, and Tower Ladder 14 is visible as well. Photos of Engine 117 and the overall fire scene are also included. The images captured by Tim Olk provide further insight into the challenging conditions faced by firefighters that day. They show firefighters covered in ice, the icy aftermath of the fire scene, and the frigid environment they worked in. One particularly striking image shows a firefighter completely encased in ice after battling the blaze. These photos truly capture the intense effort and dedication of the firefighters who responded to this incident, especially given the extreme cold and hazardous conditions. It was a difficult operation, but their professionalism and teamwork made all the difference.
