Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire, 12-31-14 (more)

I just witnessed something incredible happen at the intersection of Cermak and State Street. Around 2 a.m., there was a major fire that broke out, and it was absolutely massive. The flames were so intense they lit up the entire night sky. I’ve never seen anything like it—it was both terrifying and mesmerizing at the same time. There were multiple fire trucks on the scene, and the firefighters were working tirelessly to get the situation under control. It was freezing cold, and you could see the ice forming on some of their equipment as they battled the blaze. One of the photos I took shows a fire truck completely covered in ice, which really captures how extreme the conditions were. Another image I captured gives you a front-row seat to the chaos. The heat from the fire was so powerful that it almost feels like you can feel the intensity through the screen. You can see the firefighters in action, hoses spraying water with everything they’ve got. There’s also a shot where you can see the glowing embers flying through the air, carried by the wind. The whole incident is still unfolding, but the damage seems pretty extensive. As someone who’s lived in Chicago for years, this is one of those moments that reminds me of the city's resilience. Despite the danger, the firefighters remained calm and focused, doing everything they could to protect the surrounding buildings and keep everyone safe. If you want to see more of what happened, I have a series of photos that really capture the scale and drama of the event. And if you’re interested, there’s also a video taken by my friend Steve Redick that gives you an even closer look at the firefighting efforts. Watching it feels like you’re right there with them in the thick of things. This is definitely one of those nights that will stick with me for a long time. Let’s hope they manage to contain the fire soon and prevent any further damage. If you live nearby, stay safe and be cautious—this kind of situation can escalate quickly.
