Dive incident in River Forest, 3/8/15
Yesterday afternoon, I had the chance to witness a pretty intense incident involving a car accident near North and Thatcher streets. A vehicle somehow went over the guardrail and ended up in the Des Plaines River. The local fire departments don’t have their own dive teams, so they called in the Chicago Squad 7 divers from O’Hare. I was able to observe how they set up the access ladder and prepared the divers for the rescue operation.
It was fascinating to see how everything unfolded, though unfortunately, the thick tree branches blocked my view quite a bit. But even from where I stood, I could tell it was a challenging situation. There were some unusual vehicles on the scene, like an old engine that Squad 7 seemed to be using as a spare. Also, the boat I saw appeared to be from the North Riverside Fire Department, and it was launched upstream from where I was positioned.
The initial search didn’t turn up anything, which was both relieving and concerning at the same time. As of now, they’ve sent out another dive team to continue searching further downstream. I’m speculating that the driver or passenger might have been unaccounted for when the car went into the water.
Unfortunately, all the photos I took are placeholders since the images haven’t loaded properly yet. I’ll make sure to update this post once they’re fully visible. From what I remember, there were several key moments, including the divers preparing their equipment, the Northbrook Fire Department’s dive truck being deployed, and various other emergency vehicles on standby.
The whole event made me realize just how crucial teamwork is during situations like these. The firefighters and divers worked efficiently, and despite the challenges posed by the environment, they remained focused. I hope the outcome turns out okay—no news is usually good news in cases like this.
