Post Traumatic Stress in the fire service
In recent developments reported by nbcdfw.com, Dallas Fire-Rescue is set to launch a groundbreaking initiative aimed at providing enhanced support for members struggling with post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, and other work-related mental health challenges. This initiative, which has been in the works since last year, has involved representatives from all three fire associations collaborating closely with the department to craft a comprehensive solution.
The tragic suicide of one of their colleagues in 2017 served as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for such a program. In response, posters featuring a dedicated 24-hour hotline number, alongside a clickable hyperlink and QR code leading to a supportive website, will soon be displayed in every DFR firehouse. These resources will ensure that firefighters and paramedics can swiftly access vital information about treatment options tailored to their specific needs.
Chief David Coatney emphasized the importance of confidentiality, stating, “All of these options ensure anonymity for the individual reaching out, which is crucial given the audience we’re addressing.†While mental health services were previously managed through the city of Dallas' Employee Assistance Program (EAP), this new program seeks to dismantle lingering stigmas around seeking help, particularly within older generations of firefighters.
Historically, Coatney noted, there was a tendency among some to "tough it out" rather than openly discuss their struggles. He remarked, “Back then, if someone admitted they were affected by a distressing call, they might hear something like ‘suck it up.’ Thankfully, attitudes have evolved significantly.â€
To date, the department has partnered with more than half a dozen local mental health organizations to offer a range of services, including counseling and substance abuse treatment. Additionally, resiliency training is on the horizon for current department members—a course that has already been incorporated into recent cadet classes but hadn’t yet reached existing personnel. This training equips firefighters and paramedics with tools to manage the emotional toll of their demanding roles.
As part of these efforts, the department aims to create an environment where mental health is treated with the same urgency and respect as physical well-being. By fostering open dialogue and offering accessible resources, Dallas Fire-Rescue hopes to lead the way in supporting its frontline heroes both mentally and emotionally.
