Working fire in Stickney, 5-7-15

On the morning of May 7, 2015, Stickney firefighters responded to an active fire at the Hawthorne Race Course. The structure affected was located at 3701 South Laramie Avenue and consisted of apartments situated above a horse barn. Fortunately, the fire was confined to the second floor, limiting the overall damage. As I passed by, I couldn’t help but notice the commotion and the thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky. Emergency vehicles lined the streets, their lights flashing, as firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the blaze under control. It was a scene that unfolded quickly, with crews from multiple units arriving to assist. The heat was intense, even from a distance, and the smell of burning wood lingered in the air. The building itself is quite distinctive, with its unique layout combining residential and equestrian spaces. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, though it’s clear the fire caused significant damage to the upper level. As I stood there watching the efforts unfold, I couldn’t help but think about the hard work and dedication of these firefighters who risk their lives daily to protect our communities. Later, as I reviewed some of the images captured moments after the incident, it became evident just how serious the situation was. One photo showed the charred remains of the second floor, while another captured the firefighters drenched in sweat as they continued their efforts well into the afternoon. Another image, taken by an unknown photographer, provided a broader view of the scene, highlighting the scale of the operation. This event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced not only by those living and working at the race course but also by first responders who put themselves in harm's way to keep us safe. Though the flames have now been extinguished, the recovery process will undoubtedly take time, and support for those impacted will be crucial moving forward.
