Skokie flies WTC Patriot Flag
The Skokie Fire Department had the honor of hosting a 30' x 50' Patriot Flag on June 16, 2011. The flag is part of a national tour, traveling through all 50 states and flying at key locations that mark the memory of September 11, 2001. During the week of September 11, 2011, it was planned to be displayed at the three sites where Americans lost their lives in the attacks.
The flag was raised from Skokie Truck Co. No. 18, located at the corner of Skokie Blvd and Golf Road. Firefighters and members of the Skokie Fire and Police Honor Guard were present for the ceremony, providing full honors during the raising of the massive flag. This event was captured by Lieutenant Hank Sajovic, who documented the moment with several photos showing the process of hoisting the flag on an aerial ladder.
The flag’s journey across the country was meant to honor the victims and show unity and resilience. It was also accompanied by a banner displaying the names of those who perished on 9/11. The flag made several stops in Illinois during the summer of 2011, including Chicago, Orland Park, Joliet, Skokie, Morton Grove, Marseilles, and Springfield.
One of the most touching moments came when retired FDNY Lieutenant Joe Torrillo joined the event. He survived the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on separate occasions—one time trapped in the first tower and later on a rescue boat when the second tower fell. His presence added a powerful emotional connection to the occasion.
The event was covered by *The Trib Local (Skokie Edition)*, which highlighted the significance of the flag’s visit and its purpose. According to the article, the flag was scheduled to fly in various cities throughout the week of June 14, starting with a special display on Flag Day in Chicago. The event not only honored the past but also inspired the community to remember and reflect on the importance of unity and service.
This kind of tribute reminds us of the strength and spirit of our nation, especially in times of challenge. It's events like these that bring people together and keep the memory of 9/11 alive in a meaningful way.
