South Chicago Heights photo history

In MABAS Division 27, a new historical gallery has been introduced for the South Chicago Heights Fire Department. This section showcases a collection of 15 images that offer a glimpse into the department's rich past. One of the highlights is a reproduction of an old photograph depicting the original fire station from the early 1900s, capturing the essence of the community’s first responders.

The image, sourced from the Bill Friedrich Collection, shows the original fire station with an engine whose history remains unknown. It serves as a powerful reminder of the department's humble beginnings and the dedication of those who served before us.

Another notable addition is a photo taken by the late Dan Martin, featuring a 1950 Mack Type 45 engine participating in a local parade. This image not only highlights the equipment used by the department but also reflects the pride and tradition that have long been part of South Chicago Heights’ firefighting legacy.

This striking rig was one of only two Hi-Ranger aerial ladder trucks in the greater Chicago area outside of the Chicago Fire Department. It stands as a rare piece of firefighting history. While we currently don’t have a photo of it in action, adding such an image to the gallery would bring its story to life and give visitors a better understanding of how the department evolved over time.
