Tanker rollover with Hazmat in Des Plaines, 5-8-19

This morning, emergency responders from Des Plaines were dispatched to the bridge over I-90 on Elmhurst Road (Route 83) following reports of a tanker that had overturned. Unfortunately, the driver was trapped inside the vehicle at the time of the accident. Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and managed to successfully extricate the driver, who was then rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention. The tanker, which was carrying ethanol, had sustained multiple ruptures, causing the hazardous material to spill onto the roadway. Recognizing the potential danger, Hazmat technicians along with the Foam Task Force from O'Hare were immediately deployed to the location to address the situation. Their priority was to contain and mitigate any risks associated with the leaked substance. After the leaks were properly sealed, the ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) team applied foam to the affected area to neutralize any remaining threats. However, the cleanup process was far from over. Fire crews had to endure a lengthy wait for a specialized private cleanup crew and an additional tanker to safely transfer the remaining ethanol from the damaged vehicle. As you can see from the accompanying photos taken by Larry Shapiro, the scene was quite dramatic. The images provide a clear picture of the extent of the damage and the significant effort required to handle such incidents.
